Toddlers & 7th graders

As I was reading the discipline section in What to Expect: The Toddler Years, I realized I am prepared to parent a toddler. By replacing toddler with 7th grader in the statements below, I discovered that a toddler is a lot like a middle schooler.

  • “Toddlers are novices at following rules.”

  • “Young toddlers have limited memories.”

  • “You can’t rely on a toddler’s obedience.”

  • “Not every task is within a toddler's grasp.”

  • “Patience is a necessity when dealing with toddlers.”

I’ve been teaching middle school for 6 years, so I’m totally ready for Baby Barto. Plus he’s smaller, cuddlier and there’s just one of him.

(This is a photo from my first year teaching in Detroit. That was a H-U-G-E lesson in patience.)

i read your blog but didn't know your name... thanks for your comment :). i worked with middle schoolers during college. i think they are totally nuts (much like myself) so we get along quite well! you are a ROCK STAR for teaching such folks.

This was too funny! I think the words "smaller" and "cuddlier" are key. And I would also add "yours".
Sara, I think you are handling the preparations so well - your thoughts, your reading, learning amharic, sending gifts, new recipes with teff. You ARE ready for Baby Barto and I know he is ready for the two of you!
