Inspired by this post at Under the Acacia Tree, I’m going to implement my own version of the cultural immersion project. In many of the adult transracial adoptee writings I have read, a common theme is that white parents often failed to recognize the significance race played in the lives of their children. Before becoming Turo’s mother, I had all these grand plans of how I was going to incorporate Ethiopian and African American culture into our lives. Well, keeping up with a toddler has been its own challenge and the cultural/identify stuff has not been as present as I would like it to be.
So, the aim of April is to be much more mindful about race and culture in our day to day life. I want to work on picking more books with African or African American characters, listening to music by African or African American artists, visiting places where Turo can see more kids and adults that look like him rather than like me and seeking out resources that will make me a better parent to my Ethiopian-American boy.
Any suggestions?
