Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

As part of my April challenge to incorporate more African and African American culture into our lives, I took Turo to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit last week. Turo was intrigued by the A-Z African exhibit and the echoing atrium.

We saw several African American student groups and Turo pointed and exclaimed "Africa, Africa." Apparently, he has transferred our discussion that he has brown skin and is from Africa to others that look like him. While nobody noticed his declaration at the museum, Turo made the same comment to the waiter at IHOP when he was out to breakfast with Jose. This led to me trying to explain to Turo that people who live here and have brown skin are called "African Americans." So, now he points and attempts to say "African American." I have to admit, these vocal observations make me a tad nervous. I realize that he's two and is interested in others who look like him. Yet, I worry that someone will be offended. I worry that I'll look like a clueless white mother. But I know I just need to go with it and proudly say "Yes, Turo he is African American just like you. "

Oh, I think that is fab and cute that he points and says "African American"...it shows that you are parenting him to be proud of his likeness with them, and that is GREAT! I think other AA's will be proud of you too.

Oh so cool that you took him to the African American museum. He sounds so vocal and inquisitive, which I think is great, I can't imagine people being insulted by hearing something like that, but you never I guess. I can see where you're coming from. One time my brother in law thought I'd be offended because someone said the word "Mexican" - and I'm thinking, goodgod when did "Mexican" become derogatory - in all actuality it's a nationality, people, duh. (And then in actuality I'm not Mexican in that sense, but either way you get my point.)

I'm going to take Olls to the African American Art gallery here in Tulsa in the historic Black district. He's still a little young, but I've never been there myself and want to go.
