This weekend we went to Jose’s favorite large budget mall. I found myself in a children’s clothing store while Jose looked at shoes. Here is some of my internal dialogue.
“What size should I buy? I guess 18 month should be okay. That’s still five months away. We’ll have him in five months, right? I wonder what the return policy is? I should ask in case I have to bring this stuff back.”
“I don’t want to buy him things that are stereotypically male. Does everything have to have sports or cars? Or this shirt that says ‘tough stuff?’ What kind of message are we sending to boys saying that they have to be tough?”
“Look at these cute outfits with African animals. Can I buy him stuff with giraffes, lions and monkeys? They’re sweet, but could people take it the wrong way?”
“Which stuffed animal is the cutest? He could cuddle with this while he waits for us. Don’t cry in the middle of the kids clothing store. Hold it together, Sara.”
“I wonder how old that kid is? Do you think he’s Baby Barto’s size? Would it be odd to ask? Are people freaking out because I keep staring at their children?”

Hi, my name is Whitney, and my hubby Aaron and are also adopting from Ethiopia! I saw that you live in Dallas.. we are in the McKinney area. I stumbled upon your blog, and enjoy reading your story! www.pratterbox.blogspot.com
You did so well at posting internal dialogue...which can be so hard to describe. I also overanalyze everything...but with a girl it's more of the princess issues, mini skirts, and the "I *heart* me" shirts. Where do we draw the line? I hope you get your hands on your baby soon! Thinking of you.

Sara,
That is too funny. I went shopping this weekend and the asked myself the same questions and I’m not expecting a referral until June. I ended up purchasing 5 outfits size 18 months with a 30 day return policy. I just couldn’t help myself. Isn’t it a great feeling just to know that your son will be coming home soon?
Congratulations!!!
Don't get upset with me, but I had to laugh at the part about the animal clothing and being hesitant to buy them because of what people might think.
Animals, no matter where they originate from, belong to us all to enjoy...I say if you see a "boy-cute" animal shirt that you think Baby Barto will get some wear out of, BUY IT! In fact, buy an extra one for me and send it to the CocoPrincess---she'll definately be wearing clothing with animals on it...
I'll send you my address :)!!!!
This is so funny and honest. I love your blog. We just finished the home study (also adopting from Ethiopia).
